Confessions of an indie girl
Tuesday, October 22, 2002
I recently played the Marine Academy in Maine...There are all sorts of Disney
worlds, my friends. To the singleton female singer-songwriter from NYC,
let me tell you, this is a whole new level of Disney world... I appeared
to be the only female in sight amongst many men in uniform... big, strong
men.... sailors... larger then life with the sea shining in the background.
In a lucky bout of fate, there just so happened to be an opening in the
on-campus conference/hotel center, so I was even awarded the opportunity
to sleep among them....
Originally upon receiving word of this gig I had envisioned
entertaining the troops on some huge vessel... I could play Ms. USA! Or Ms.
NY.. or Ms. 24th street, or whatever...
I thought maybe we'd high tail it around the harbor a bit while I whipped
them into a frenzy of feminine rock & roll..... I thought of weary, female
deprived sailors on a ship, danger at every turn.... I thought they could
be enlightened by the sight of the ethereal female songstress who had crossed
the sea at high risk to herself just to play for them.....
So, admittedly, I was a tad disappointed to be playing instead
in the coffee shop on dry land.... Getting on stage nontheless in chic cowgirl
wear I did receive a few hoots and hollers but they were mostly from the
concession stand workers....
However, a few sailors did make it to the show and afterwards,
cutie sailor offered me tour of big tall ship... I was told tour could take
many hours and the potential to "get lost" in big ship was a real possibility...
We walked instead along the harbor and I heard about the merry life of a
sailor and all those long days at sea. And alas, at dawn, all Disney worlds
must come to an end because it's always time to get back into the car and
drive to the next land of musical enchantment...We all have different voyages
waiting for us after all....and some of them do require a paddle. So, I said
goodbye to my cutie sailor and left him with music & a poster for a daily
pin-up reminder of the benefits of dry land....
